Artist Statement
In the studio I investigate the way we live in the world, how we make sense of it, communicate with it, and the way we speak to one another through visual forms, symbols, and language. I consider things that happen within a day and record the banality and the particulars of these daily occurrences. I am interested in investigating and drawing comparisons between the micro and macro levels of life. My work explores details we cannot see - the inner workings of human anatomy, the detail of an object, a single breath, as well as the larger scope of human behavior - aerial views of civilization, flow of traffic, and the spread and cause of disease. My work has evolved to embody anatomy, physiology, and education about the symbols used in healthcare. I believe in making images and objects that raise questions about the world we live in today, where it's going, and where we've been.
Education, Art, Illustration & Design:
I used to think I needed to keep these things categorized and sometimes separate, but through my practices I find that there is a lot of overlap in sensibilities, aesthetic, and skill. This includes my time with the studio, working in health care, and as an educator. Artist Joan Brown says it best, “I’m not any one thing: I’m not just a teacher, I’m not just a mother, I’m not just a painter, I’m all of these things plus, and the more areas I can tap, the richer each one of the others will be.”
